Hard Sell Book and Movie
Hard Sell is the debut novel written by the author Jamie Reidy, one of the top salesmen in the Pfizer at one of the most iconic times for the pharmaceutical industry.
The hard sell book was later adapted by producers of Fox 2000 as a movie called “Love and other Drugs”, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway.
The main point that we must say is that if you enjoyed the movie, very likely you might not like this book as there are a lot of differences between the two versions of the Hard Sell story. There are a couple of things that we need to highlight about the differences between one and the other. For instance, the book version of the main character Jamie lacks of a romantic interest, being presented with the attitude of a “jerk”, but the self-deprecating humor and the tone of the novel inspires charm about the character. It's fair to say that one can understand why Reidy was such a good salesman.
Also to be honest, between the character of the movie and the character of the book, is fairly obvious that anybody would buy medications from the guy in the book.
Even though, somehow Hollywood tried to nice up the story by adding the always wonderful actress Anne Hathaway, and making her do some sophisticated risqué nude and sex scenes, we sensed that the movie director Edward Zwick (who also directed Blood Diamond), tried to steer away this movie from the personal humorous story that is in the book to create a more heart warming, emotional romantic-comedy story that makes you love the movie, while at the same time it uses that intensity to inspire hatred against Big Pharma. Also the movie and the book are both set in the early beginnings of the online pharmacy websites creation, informing a bit more of this new era in the field of pharmaceutical products, specially with the huge demand of Viagra online.
The Hard Sell book becomes an interesting reading and it's really difficult to put it down after a couple of chapters and is greatly entertaining. We strongly recommend you go see it and compare the two versions and pick your favorite.
